home media photos and music. collecting bits and apps.

We would like a photo frame slideshow. And a music player (with decent sound and easy selection of music). And I was also looking at things to play internet radio.

We have a cute QNAP NAS (serves mounts, iTunes) and wireless network.

A tablet with a nice place to dock it and speakers would do the job. If we can get a couple of apps.

First up streaming music player. Skifta looks good. Already tried it on phone and easy setup. Simple interface to play music. Doesn't do photo slideshow, just allows photo browsing.
http://www.skifta.com/ Qualcomm. Cute slogan. "Skifta - May your stuff be with you."
Good philosophy. Also makes  easy to stream music to a different device. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.skifta.android.app&hl=en

I tried MediaHouse before on phone. It does the job also, plays music. Browses photos. Interface a bit clunkier but more options. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dbapp.android.mediahouse&hl=en

On the server side, some of my music files need to be cleaned up and metadata added :-7
http://www.google.ie/search?sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=ogg+mp3+metadata+editor
http://lifehacker.com/233336/alpha-geek-whip-your-mp3-library-into-shape-part-iii-metadata

Next. Digital Photo Frame.
Hmmm. Would like to play over wireless.
Need to search more for playing wireless and liking/selecting photos, making playlists etc.

We will also be  able to play music from internet.
Spotify
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.spotify.mobile.android.ui&hl=en
Pandora is a spotify clone? Or more? Or less?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pandora.android&hl=en

Internet Radio.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.android.DroidLiveLite xiialive looks shiny
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.leadapps.android.radio&hl=en AOR A Online Radio

And of course it being a tablet it can do a bit more fondleslabby wondrousness.  Games, music/sound, youtube, internet, family calendar, Skype, ... oh dear.

Being an Android tablet we need to build a photo frame / music playing docking station. Humm. Wood? Sugru? :)

Why is the sky blue? xkcd

I really quite like it when simple questions have complicated but explainable answers. But then the _real_ answer is a bit more complicated than first.

Terry Pratchett. Education = "Telling lies to children". :) The term appeared in the book The Science of Discworld. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lie-to-children "the simplification of technical or difficult-to-understand material". http://wiki.lspace.org/mediawiki/index.php/Lies-To-Children

Why is the sky blue? (and also, why is the sun yellow?)

  http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/sky_color.png

Oh.
So, then. Why _isn’t_ the sky violet?

I think a more complete explaination is Rayleigh scattering of wavelengths with short (blue and violet) wavelengths being scattered more AND we have better perception of blue than violet with our eyes. See the natural daylight/sunlight spectrums below. Blue is slightly higher but our measurements and perceptions of light (and sound) is logarithmic so a small increase in intensity scale dominates more in our perception. I think. ☺

Pretty! I think I can see a little violet :)

Can we find a spectral power distribution for skylight ?
A spectrum taken of blue sky clearly showing solar Fraunhofer lines and atmospheric water absorption band.
Comparison of the scattering efficiency of blue light in the atmosphere compared to red light.

“Our eyes don't work as well on violet as they do on blue.”
“The answer to this deeper question lies not only in the sky but also in our eyes and in the way in which we perceive color.”

Hey kids. What colour would the sky be if there was no atmosphere?
Draw a diagram of the paths different colours of  light takes from sun, into atmosphere and down to you.

What colour is the Sun?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_temperature
The Sun closely approximates a black body radiator.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun
Our sun is a yellow dwarf, because its visible radiation is most intense in the yellow-green portion of the spectrum and although its color is white, from the surface of the Earth it may appear yellow because of atmospheric scattering of blue light.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_spectrum

“CIE D55” – represents mid-morning or mid-afternoon daylight and has a correlated color temperature of approximately 5500 degrees Kelvin.

Typical spectral power distribution graph for daylight. Notice the strong presence (high relative power) of ALL wavelengths (or the "full color spectrum"). Daylight provides the highest level of color rendering across the spectrum.

Now. :) Why do rainbows always appear ... over there. At a certain angle to the sun each time. ?

Of course we can't go away without looking at some spectral graphs for light from electric light bulbs.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b0/Spectral_Power_Distributions.png
Characteristic spectral power distributions (SPDs) for an incandescent lamp (left) and a fluorescent lamp (right). The horizontal axes are in nanometers and the vertical axes show relative intensity in arbitrary units. Light sources and illuminants may be characterized by their spectral power distribution (SPD). The relative SPD curves provided by many manufacturers may have been produced using 10-nanometer (nm) increments or more on their spectroradiometer.[33] The result is what would seem to be a smoother ("fuller spectrum") power distribution than the lamp actually has. Owing to their spiky distribution, much finer increments are advisable for taking measurements of fluorescent lights, and this requires more expensive equipment. [edit]Color temperature in astronomy

And a bit more astronomy, from a far away star this time.

Miracle on 34th Street Song meanings

Some of the terms in the songs for Miracle on 34th Street are a bit puzzling. Some might say they are quaint, others might call them dated. For the kids and also us adults who would like to know a bit more about the references to New York and American culture in the 40s here is the result of some googling:

Song: Big Ca-lown Balloons
"Pappy Yokum with Mammy trying to hide him, tipsy in the middle of the day."  Li'l Abner was a newspaper cartoon featuring a fictional clan of hillbillies in the impoverished town of DogpatchKentucky. Written and drawn by Al Capp (1909–1979), Pappy Yokum was Li'l Abner's lazy and dull-witted "pappy".
"Keystone Cops" "Float-in' in their famous Model-T"
Look up Keystone Cops on YouTubeThe Keystone Cops were fictional incompetent policemen, featured in silent film comedies in the early 20th century. They chased villians and actors like Charlie Chaplain around streets and towns of the movies.

Song: Here's Love

"C.I.O. to U.S. Steel" C.I.O. was a worker union organisation and U.S. Steel the Steel Industry. It was formed by the C.I.O. stands for Congress of Industrial Organizations. It was formed in 1936. It disbanded in 1942 to become the United Steel Workers of America. "U.S. Steel maintained the labor policies of Andrew Carnegie, which called for low wages and opposition to unionization." " The Company dropped its hard-line, anti-union stance in 1937, when Myron Taylor, then president of U.S. Steel, agreed to recognize the Steel Workers Organizing Committee," "The Steelworkers continue to have a contentious relationship with U.S. Steel, " but far less so than previously.

"Jolly Nikita to Norman Vincent Peale" Jolly Nikita has certainly become quite dated. Searching the internet finds greyhoulds and a recent Nikita TV series. Dr. Norman Vincent Peale (1898 - 1993) was a minister and author (most notably of The Power of Positive Thinking)  Born and raised in Ohio. He became one of New York City's most famous preachers.

"Michelob to Blatz" These are beer companies. Michelob beer is still sold today by the Anheuser-Busch beer company. The Valentin Blatz Brewing Company produced Blatz Beer from 1851 until 1959.

"Shamrocks to the Orange-men and both to old Purdue." I assume . . . Shamrocks are the Catholic Irish. The Orange-men are the protestant Northern Irish. Purdue University  located in West Lafayette, Indiana, U.S., Purdue was founded with help from Lafayette businessman John Purdue. College of science, technology, and agriculture. The first classes were held in 1874. "Hail to old Purdue" is a traditional song (official fight song) of Purdue University.

Glencullen Musical and Dramatic Society News Oct/Nov 2012

Glencullen Musical and Dramatic Society News
GMDS present the Irish premiere amateur performance of Miracle on 34th St. the Musical in December in the Mill Theatre. This is a great zippy New York Musical Show for Theatre lovers and families. It is also a great Christmas show. The story is told of Doris and Susan Walker, a mother and daughter that are much too practical to believe in Santa Claus. Filled with humor, spectacle of New York at Christmas, Macy’s famous Thanksgiving Parade and beloved songs this joyous, heart-warming musical is pure family entertainment.
It is just 5 weeks to show now and time is flying. Rehearsals are proceeding apace each Tue and Thur night in St. Tiernans. There is nothing quite like the buzz from live theatre. Songs, dance numbers, choreography and acting are coming together now. We still have a lot of work to do until everything is learned. And then we need to polish! There will be an even busier time coming up to show. We will be working on costumes, props and the set and including them in rehearsdals. We have Tech rehearsal and Dress rehearsals on the Mon and Tue before the show opens.
Congratulations to all who have been assigned roles! We have a great cast including people from ages of 8 years old to people in their seventies. Some of the main roles are as follows:
Leona McEvoy - DORIS WALKER, a very sharp young career-woman and free thinker
Eimear Fitzpatrick - SUSAN, her six-year-old daughter
Shane Morgan - FRED GAILY, a handsome Marine captain, mustering out into civilian life
Liam Corrigan - KRIS KRINGLE, the real McCoy
Christopher Bass - MARVIN SHELLHAMMER, an aggressive but somewhat bungling junior executive
George Ward - JUDGE MARTIN GROUP

There is a huge amount of work being put in by our production team who are: Director - Tom Ronayne, Choreographer - Helen McCann, Musical Director - Gerry Connolly, Chairperson - Peter O'Brien.

We are happy to say tickets are selling quickly and we would advise you to book your tickets well in advance. Please spread the word to your friends, family and neighbours who would like to come and see the show. Tickets are available through the Mill Theatre box office on 01-2969340 or online www.milltheatre.ie.

The Musical by Meredith Willson is based on the 20th Century Fox Picture with story by Valentine Davies and screenplay by George Seaton. The film starred Maureen O'Hara and John Payne. It is perhaps one of O'Hara's best remembered films.

Performance dates and times:

Wed Dec 5th through to Sat Dec 8th 8pm evening show

application to build retirement center in Ticknock mountain hill field comes back again. Jan 2010 to Oct 2012

An application to build retirement center in Ticknock (requires re-zoning or getting application in through a planning variation ("What's that?" "Hmmm, um not sure.") is back before Dun Laoghaire County Council yet again. Someone is being very persistent and has lots of local councillors (but thankfully not all!) on side.

In 2010 the County Manager went into detail and recommended that planning permission be not granted.

17.19 SLO 97: Retirement Village - Ticknock 5
Recommendation
Remove Specific Local Objective No.97 from the Draft Development Plan.

But it has risen from the ashes and appeared again as "Variation No. 9" to Dun-Laoghaire Rathdown Co Co Development Plan 2010-2016. Submissions invited deadline this Fri. Eep.

To me, the site seems a bad location a bit isolated from local community with much better locations unused all over south Dublin. You can drive to it fine but location would be much better if you were in a local town/village/community. With local shops. Public transport. Friendly neighbours with a lovely mix of ages, races and creeds! :) There are many existing developments down the hills a little bit more built upon and not built upon which have low or no occupancy due to economic downturn. Just climb up Three-Rock from Ticknock and look at the view! :) Remember to bring along your NAMAland or land planning zone maps!

To: Director of Planning,
    County Hall,
    Marine Road,
    Dun Laoghaire.

Date: Wed 10 Oct 2012.

Dear Sir/Madam,

With reference to Retirement "Village" at Ticknock - Variation No. 9.
I would like make this submission.

I think Independant Living housing in a center with services for retired and elderly is a good idea.
But I think the location on this site is a very bad idea.

* The location of this site seems to me to be a bad location for the Retirement Village.
It would be much better located near or in an existing town or village center.
There is already much zoned land as yet unused as well as developed or partly developed land unused where a better location would be found.

For Independant Living access to a regular village center with shops, services, public transport and integrating with local community is very important.
The site will have services for elderly and possibly a local shop but this is limited and will not support a true village or community.
The location is not near and doesn't integrate with a local center of population or existing village.
The location is a car-dependant location for access to anything off site.
The location isolates the retirement village and would make it much less attractive to independant living individuals.

The grange road itself is narrow, limited footpaths, fast traffic and carries lots of vehicular traffic during week and on weekends.
The turn onto grange road from site is a difficult turn to make onto main road, nearby corner blocking fast moving traffic from Lambs cross direction.

The local roads and footpaths have steep slopes.
In recent estates which have been built in the area steep roads and footpaths are common and these can be difficult for young and old alike.
Especially considering the development is for fit individuals moving to less able accessibility is important for walkers, wheelchair users, young visitors.
A flat site with flat access to site to close-by community would be much better.
Much already available zoned land in Dublin is flatter.

The location in Dublin foothills has been prone to some weeks of lasting ice and snow over the last winters.
As a resident in Leopardstown Heights on the Green we have a little slope compared what is in newer developments locally.
Ice and compacted snow have remained on roads and especially on footpaths for over a week every year for past few years.
Very pretty and fun but especially a problem for elderly people.
Flatter site and closer to existing community and village is important.

* The Retirement Village does not seem to fit into any of the permitted in principle categories.
It is not a real village though village is in the name,
The development is not big enough to support a real village shops and services.
Integration with an existing community and village center would provide real services and benefit community in both ways young to old and back.

To me, the site seems a terrible location with much better locations unused all over south Dublin.
It would be doing especially a bad service to residents of this development to allow this to go ahead and then find themselves isolated.

Yours sincerely,

James Coleman,
37 Mount Eagle Green,
Leopardstown Heights,
Dublin 18

not a community facility as it doesn't connect with local community, a tenuous connection at best
as a public service location would be much better in many sites all over dublin

When the development, proposed by the landowner Rod McGovern, was initially discussed at council, on November 19th, 2009, it was rejected outright by councillors following a recommendation by county manager Owen Keegan.
However, a week later, on November 23rd, councillor Tom Joyce (FG) and councillor Tom Murphy (FF) proposed a specific local objective for the site to allow for the development and councillors from both parties voted for it.

(i) Support the Retirement Village:
• Close proximity of ageing population
• Close  proximity  to  amenities  e.g. Dundrum
• Draft  Plan  fails  to  accommodate  and provide for the elderly
• Serviced  land  unfit  for  agricultural purposes.

The up-coming production of GMDS is Miracle on 34th Street - The Musical. This is the very first amateur performance of this musical in Ireland! The chorus have started with rehearsing songs for the musical and auditions for lead parts have been taking place. The music is new to many of us and it is a novelty to be working on new songs and getting to know each character.

DORIS WALKER, a very sharp young career-woman and free thinker
 SUSAN, her six-year-old daughter
FRED GAILY, a handsome Marine captain, mustering out into civilian life
 KRIS KRINGLE, the real McCoy
MARVIN SHELLHAMMER, an aggressive but somewhat bungling junior executive
 R. H. MACY, the boss

Miracle on 34th Street was originally a 1947 Christmas Musical film from 20th century fox starring Maureen O'Hara and John Payne. It is perhaps one of O'Hara's best remembered films. Did you know that O'Hara was born in 1920 as Maureen FitzSimons in Ranelagh in Dublin? She trained in drama, music and dance with the Abbey Theatre and the Rathmines Theatre Company from age 6 to 17. Her father insisted she learn practical business skills but she loved singing and theatre and her career in film started first in England with actor Charles Laughton. At the outbreak of World War II her contract was sold to the American film production company RKO. She worked in low budget films until she was rescued by director John Ford and the rest is history. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maureen_O'Hara

The show is on in the Mill Theatre from Wed Dec 5th to Sun Dec 9th

Glencullen Musical and Dramatic Society

Rehearsals are just starting for the next production of GMDS which is Miracle on 34th Street - The Musical. We are very excited to be bringing to you the very first performance of this musical in Ireland!

Miracle on 34th Street is a great Christmas show, recalling the magic of Christmas from childhood when Santa Claus was real. The show really brings back the excitement of Christmas and it is a nice antidote to the mayhem of Xmas shopping! We are putting together an action-packed show again this Season.

Our director Tom Ronayne has had a busy Summer on stage in an intense version of John B Keane's classic ‘Sharon’s Grave’ at the Mill Theatre in June with the Balally Players. Congratulations to all on a great production! Tom and crew are now preparing for a story in a very different setting.

Miracle On 34th Street tells the story of Doris and Susan Walker, a mother and daughter that are much too practical to believe in Santa Claus. Doris is in charge of Personnel at Macy's Department Store in New York (circa 1947) and it's Christmastime. The real Kris Kringle is hired to be Santa Claus for Macy's and the spirit of Christmas comes up against the cynicism and materialism of the practical New York business people. Filled with humor, spectacle of New York at Christmas and Macy’s famous Thanksgiving Parade and beloved songs this joyous, heart-warming musical is pure family entertainment.

The Musical by Meredith Willson is based on the 20th Century Fox Picture with story by Valentine Davies and screenplay by George Seaton.

The Mill Theatre have had the builders in all August repairing the flood damage from last year. The stage is set. We are looking forward to seeing you all in rehearsals in St. Tiernan's school or see you in the Mill Theatre in the first two weeks of December!
